Gutter guard installation

Put the ladder away. Get guards picked for what actually falls on your roof and fitted to the gutters you have.

A gutter guard is a cover over the open top of the gutter. Rain passes through or around it, and leaves, twigs and seed pods stay on top until wind or the next storm clears them off. For Lynchburg-area homes under hardwoods and pines, the right guard can turn a twice-a-year cleaning into a quick check now and then.

How do I pick the right guard?

Start with what lands on your roof, then think about how fast water comes off it.

  • Broad leaves from oaks, maples and poplars. Most rigid metal guards handle them. Perforated aluminum is the budget option.
  • Pine needles, maple seeds and spring tassels. These slip through larger openings and jam downspouts. Fine stainless micro-mesh is the usual answer.
  • Steep, tall roofs. Water can come off a steep slope fast enough to skip over some guards. Ask how the product you're quoted handles a heavy downpour.
  • Curb appeal. Low-profile mesh is hard to see from the street. Hoods add a visible cap along the roofline.

What happens on installation day?

A careful installer starts by cleaning out the gutters and flushing the downspouts, then checks the slope and tightens or replaces loose hangers and leaky corners. The guard is fastened to the front lip of the gutter. The back edge either tucks under the first course of shingles or screws to the fascia, depending on the product. Ask which method you're getting and why.

Can guards affect my roof warranty?

They can if the installer lifts, bends or nails through shingles in a way the shingle maker doesn't allow. Find your roof paperwork, tell the installer the shingle brand and age, and ask for the mounting method in writing. Fascia-mounted guards avoid touching the shingles at all.

What upkeep do guards need?

Some. Plan on brushing or hosing off the top of the guards once in a while, especially after the spring pollen and seed drop and after a heavy needle fall. Check the valleys where two roof slopes meet, because they collect the most debris. The payoff is that the inside of the gutter and the downspouts stay clear, which is the part that's hard to reach.

What changes the price of gutter guards?

  • Product. Stainless micro-mesh costs more than perforated aluminum or inserts.
  • Linear feet and height. Two-story and walk-out walls need more ladder work and safety setup.
  • Gutter repairs first. Re-pitching, new hangers or sealing corners add time.
  • Warranty terms. Longer clog-free and material warranties usually carry a higher price.

We don't quote prices. The gutter company sets the price after it measures the runs, counts the downspouts and sees how high and steep your roof is, so treat any number given over the phone as a rough starting point.

Common questions

Are gutter guards worth it in Lynchburg?

If trees hang over your roof and you clean gutters more than once a year, they usually pay off in time and ladder risk. Homes with no nearby trees may not need them.

Will micro-mesh clog with pollen?

Fine pollen can film the top of mesh in spring and slow water down. A rinse with a hose or a soft brush usually clears it.
